In 2018 Gladstone Park Secondary College was granted funding from Pick My Project for the construction of a reptile space in the science office foyer, and community garden located next to senior school.
In the following months, the VCAL Students took an active part in the design and construction of several garden beds, as well as the design and maintenance of a number of aquaponics systems, containing trout and goldfish.
Across the last 18 months students enrolled in the VCAL Program have the opportunity to learn new skills in a number of areas as they choose appropriate seasonal produce, germinate the plants using a state-of-the-art greenhouse system, maintain the healthy growth of plant life and harvest the mature fruit and vegetables for sale to the school community.
Students have used these skills to go on to a number of further study pathways, including building and construction at RMIT, horticulture and landscape gardening apprenticeships and further work in fruit and vegetables. The community garden is a great place for students to receive applied learning as they develop their skills ready for future careers.
